3.1 - speed and distance

scalar units with magnitude
vector units with magnitude and direction
speed definition a scalar unit measured in ms^-1
equation for speed v = change in distance / change in time
average speed definition the mean speed across the whole journey (sum of distances / total time taken)
plotting a distance - time graph distance is always positive speed is the gradient linear = constant speed non-linear = has acceleration flat line = stationary y is 0 = at starting point
