Chapter 10 Vocab

Multiplication and Other Operations Vocab.

WordDefinitionExample
Repeated Addition Property of Multiplication If n is a positive interger, then nx= x+x+x+.......+x. n addends. x+x+x+x+x+=5x
Like terms These numbers can be simplified into a single number. 12y+y+2y=15y
Unlike terms These numbers cannot be simplified by a single number. 12x + 6y
Multiplication Property of Equality If x=y, then ax=ay. x=y, x=5, a=2, ay=ax
Equation of the form ax+b=c In this equation, the unknown w is multiplied by a number. Then a second number is added. 3w+5=20
Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition For any numbers a, b, and x, ax+bx+=(a+b)x and x(a+b)= xa+xb. 7*9+12*9= 9*(7+12)
Distributive Property of Multiplication over Subtraction For any numbers a, b, and x, ax-bx= (a-b)x and x(a-b)= xa-xb. 7*3.98= 7(4-.02)
Net A plane pattern for a 3-dimensional figure. n/a
Surface Area The surface area of a rectangular solid is the sum of the areas of its faces. n/a
Numerically equal When the area and perimeter of a figure are equal. If the area of a rectangular solid is 6cm*3cm=18cm, and the perimeter is 6cm+3cm+6cm+3cm=18cm
Acre A unit of measure that is used to measure land area. Farms are measured in acres, 640 acres=1 square mile
Height The perpendicular distance from any vertex of a triangle to the side opposite that vertex. Also the distance between the bases of the trapezoid. n/a
Altitude The perpendicular segment from a vertex of a triangle to the opposite side of the triangle. Same as height for the trapezoid. n/a
Base of a triange The side of a triangle perpendicular to the altitude. n/a
Area Formula for Any Triangle Let b be the length of a side of a triangle with area A. Let h be the length of a altidute drawn to that side. Then A=1/2 bh. If base is 20, and height is 15, then A=1/2 20*15=150 square units
Trapezoid A quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides. n/a
Area Formula for a Trapezoid Let A be the area of a trapezoid with bases b1 and b2 and height h. Then A=1/2 *h(b1+ b2). (blank)
Base of a trapezoid The parallel sides of a trapezoid. n/a

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
