AP Bio Safety Quiz

Can you work alone while doing a lab? Students may never work alone. No student may work in a laboratory without an instructor present
What should you do when you first enter the lab room? When first entering a science room, do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so
Can you eat/ drink in the lab? Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab. Do not use lanoratory glassware as containers for food or beverages
What should you do before entering the lab? Be prepared to work in the lab. Read all procedures thoroughly before entering the laboratory
What should you do to have good lab etiquette? Observe good housekeeping practices. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times. Bring only your laboratory intructions, worksheets, and/or reports to the work area.
How should the room be kept? Keep aisles clear. Push you chain under the deak when no in use
What should you know the locations of? Know the locations and operating procedure, where appropriate, for all saftery equipment including first aid kit, eye wash station, fire extinguisher, saftey shower, and fire blanket. Know where the fire alarm and exits are located
How ventilated should the room be and what should you use while working with harmful materials? Always work in a well ventilated area. Use the fume hood when working with voatile substances or poisonus substances. Never place your head on the fume hood.
What should you be in the lab? Be alert and procees with caution at all times. Notify the lab instructor of any unsafe conditions you observe
How should you handle chemical waste? Dispose of all chemical waster properly. NEver mix chemicals in sink drains. Sinks are to be ysed only for water and those soloutions designated.
What should you do before using equipment Lables and equipments instructions must be read carefully before use. Set up and use the perscribed apparatus as directed in the lab instructions or by by your instructor
how should you maintain your hands in a lab Keep your hands away from face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals or preserved specimens. Wash your hands after aperforming all experiments. Clean work surface and return all equipment to proper area
How should you moniter your experiments Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. You will be assigned a laboratory stations at which to work. Dont wander around the room, distract other students, or interfere with the lab experiments of others
Can students enter the storage room students are never permitted in the science storage rooms or prep areas unless given specific permission by their instructor
How should you react in the event of a fire drill know what to do if ther is a fire drill during a lab period: containers must be closed, gas valves turned off, fume hoods turned off, and any electrical equipment turned off
How should you handle any living organisms in a lab Handle all living organisms used in a lab activity in a humane manner. Perserved biological materials are to be treated w/ respect and disposed of properly
How should you hold knives in the lab When using kives and other sharp objects always carry with tipss and points pointing down and away. Never try to catch falling sharp objects. Grasp sharp instruments only by the handles
When should goggles be worn any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used, students will wear lab goggles. there are no exceptions to this rule
When can contact lenses be worn Contact lenses may be worn provided adequare eye protection is provided by specially marked, non vented saftey gogles. The instructor should know which students are wearing contact lenses in the event of eye exposure to hazardous chemicals
how should you dress for labs long hair dangling jewlety, and loose or baggy clothing are hazardous. Long hair must be tied back and dangling jewleru and loose or baggy clothing must be secured. Shoes must completely cover the foot. No sandals allowed
When should you wear lab aprons? Lab aprons have been provided for your use and should be worn during lab activities
What should you if you cause a spiil or get an injury Report any accident or injury to the instructor immediatly, no matter how trivial it may appear
What should you or your lab partner yell out if you are hurt If you or your lab partner are hurt, immediately yell out "code one, code" to get the instructor's attention
What should you do if chemicals splashes in your eye If a chemical splashed in your eyes or on your on your skin, immediatley flush with running water from the eyewash station or saftey shower for at least 20 minutes. Notify the instructor immediately.
What should you do if mercury thermometer are broken When mercury thermometers are broken, mercury must not be touched. Notify the instructor immediately.
What are all chemicals in the lab considered? All chemicals in the lab are considered dangerous. Do not touch tast, or smell any chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so. The prper technique for wafting chemical vapor will be demonstated to you
What should you do to the lable before using them Check the label on chemical bottles twice before removing any of the contents. Take only as much chemical as you need
What should you never do with leftover chemicals NEver return uncused chemicals to their original containers
What should you never use when filling a pipet Never use mouth suction to fill a pipet. Use a rubber bulb or pipet pump
How should you handle flammable hazardous liquids Handle flamable hazardous liquids over a pan to contain spills. never dispense flammable liquids anywhere near an open flame or scource of heat.
How should youo handle broken glass Never handle broken glass w/ bare hands. Use a dust pan to clean it up. Place broken or waste glassware in the designated glass disposal container
How should you remove glass tubing rom rubber stoopers Always lubericate glassware before attempting to insert it in a stopper. Always protect your hands w/ towels or cotton gloves. If a piece of glassware becomes frozen in a stopper, take it to your instructor for removal
What should you fill wash bottles with distilled water
What should you never do with hot glassware never put it in cold water, it may cause it shatter
What direction should you point the opening of a test tube while its being heated Not towards youself or anyone else
What hsould you use to handle hot glass or metal tongs or heat protective gloves
What shoud you never do with a container that is being heated look into it
What should you do when placing a hot apparatus on a lab desk Never place a hot apparatus directly on a lab desk, always use an insulating pad, allow plenty of time for hot apparatus to cool before touching it
What should you do before bending glass When bending glass, allow time for the glass to cool before futher handling. Hot and cold glass have the same cisual appearance. Determine if an object is hot by brinfing the back of your hand close to it
