What is Herot? What is it used for? Herot is a mead hall, giant tavern used for parties and singing
Where does Grendel live? In the Moors and wild marshes
In line 15, how did Hrothgar’s men feel about life? Hrothgar’s men are happy, drinking, partying, and singing.
Who was Grendel descended from? Why is this significant? Spawned in the slime of the swamp. His parents were monsters born of Cain (allusion to Cain and Abel in the Bible)
When did Grendel attack? What were the men doing? When the men were all asleep at night.
How many men did Grendel kill the first night? Kidnapped and murdered 30 men in their beds.
Where did he take the dead men? To his lair. Associated with evil.
How did Hrothgar and his men react the next morning? Hrothgar and his men are sad and they are weeping. Fearful that the murderer will come back.
What happened the next night? Grendel came back.
Where did his men sleep after this? As far from Herot as possible. There is no escaping Grendel.
How long is Herot empty? Twelve years (Twelve Winters)
Who knew about the misery of Herot? How did they find out? The whole world knew. Due to song and story sweeping across the seas.
What is the one object Grendel never touches in Herot? Why? Never dared to touch Hrothgar's throne. Because it was touched by god. Too holy for his evilness to touch.
What does Hrothgar need? Hrothgar needs a solution. They decide that they need the bravest of warriors.
What is the name of Hrothgar’s father? Healfdane
How are Hrothgar and the Danes feeling? Extremely sad and in agony.
How does Beowulf get to Hrothgar? Beowulf takes a boat across the ocean.
How many men does Beowulf take with him? Fourteen Men
Who tells the king that Beowulf and his men have arrived? Wolfgar tells the king of their arrival.
How do the Danes treat Beowulf and his men? The Danes are welcoming to Beowulf and his men.
What does Wulfgar tell Beowulf and his men to leave behind? What does Beowulf do? His weapons are left behind. So that they pose no threat to the king. He does not leave the weapons unattended he leaves a few men behind to guard the weapons.
How does Beowulf treat Hrothgar? With respect, as an ally.
What group of people told Beowulf about Hrothgar’s problem? Sailors had brought the story to Beowulf.
What trait is Beowulf most proud of? His Strength.
What are three events that show Beowulf’s strength? Rose from the darkness of war, drove five great giants into chains, swam in the blackness of night hunting monsters out of the ocean.
What request does Beowulf make of Hrothgar? He requests that Hrothgar takes care of the Geats, and to return his property to Higlac if he is to be slain.
What weapons are Beowulf going to use to kill Grendel? His hands. He is being fair because Grendel's weapon is his hands.
Is Beowulf afraid to die? Explain. No. He says that God will determine his fate.
What is the name of Beowulf’s father? Edgetho
What do the Danes do for Beowulf and his men? They threw a party to celebrate Beowulf’s victories. As well as his an his warrior’s bravery in agreeing to fight Grendel and kill him.
How did Grendel enter the hall? Grendel entered the hall, hoping to kill. He was moving fast. He snaps open the door and rips it off the hinges. He does this because he is mad.
What did Grendel see when he entered? How did he feel? Grendel saw that Herot was being protected. Grendel was ready to kill and he was hungry. He saw the hall stuffed with warriors, and he knew that it was going to be a feast for him.
How many Geats did Grendel kill? Grendel only killed one of the Geats. He ate him.
What did Beowulf do to incapacitate Grendel? He bent his hand/claws back.
How does Grendel feel when Beowulf incapacitates him? Shocked that someone could incapacitate him. Grendel was fearful.
What did Grendel want/ start to do? Grendel wanted to start to run.
What did Beowulf do as a result? Beowulf snapped his claws back into his hands. Breaking his hands because he gripped his hand so hard that his claws cracked.
How strong is Herot? What’s the only thing that can destroy it? Herot is extremely strong. The only thing that can destroy it is fire.
Where did Grendel run off to? Why? Grendel fled to his den in the marsh. So he could live out the rest of his days and die.
How did Hrothgar’s men react to Grendel running away? Hrothgar's men began laughing and cheering.
What did Beowulf hang in Herot as a symbol of his victory? Beowulf hung Grendel's claw Shoulder to claw from the ceiling.
How did the people feel about Grendel’s death? People were indifferent about Grendel’s suffering. They were joyous that he was finally gone but did not mourn for Grendel.
What did the people do after realizing Grendel was dead? They went searching for the body to assure that he was completely dead.
What did the lake look like? The water was bloody and boiling. Hell opening to receive the monster. Murky and bloody.
What were people saying about beowulf? Beowulf is a hero, and they are praising his work. He is worthy to be a king, that he would make a good leader.
What did the old soldier do for Beowulf? The old soldier starts to sing a song beginning to tale the killing of Grendel and his many victories.
How is Grendel's mom feeling She is feeling vengeful.
What does she want to do? Get revenge for her murdered son.
Where did she go? She went to Herot.
Who did she take? Hrothgar's closest friend.
What did she take? Grendel's arm. so he could be whole again.
Why didn't the Geats help? Beowulf was sleeping in a different hall.
What does Hrothgar describe to Beowulf. The dark lake in which Grendel's mother resides.
What does it look like? Secret places, wind stirs, storms, black rain, and a bubbling lake. Looking like burning torches at night.
Why does he describe this place to Beowulf? Hrothgar explains Grendel’s mother’s home as scary to get Beowulf to avenge his friend.
What does Hrothgar ask Beowulf to do? Hrothgar asks Beowulf to go there and kill Grendel’s mother promising riches.
How long does it take Beowulf to get to the bottom of the lake? It takes Beowulf hours to get to the bottom of the lake after jumping in. He held his breath for hours. Beowulf is strong in other ways that just physically.
Where did she take Beowulf? Grendel’s Mother took Beowulf to her cave “battle hall” underwater.
Why could the beasts not harm Beowulf? The beasts could not harm him because he has chainmail on protecting him.
What is Hrunting? The name of Beowulf's sword.
What got destroyed? His sword and his helmet.
Beowulf wanted the glory of winning. He wants the fame. To be immortalized. What did Beowulf want.
What is Beowulf's "new" weapon? His hands
What stopped Grendel's mother from killing Beowulf? His chainmail, woven metal blunted the blade and stopped Grendel’s mother.
What sword did Beowulf grab? Why is it unique? Beowulf grabbed a sword hammered by giants , and was massive only strong men could use it.
What happened to Grendel's mom? Beowulf Decapitated her.
Who did Beowulf go looking for? What did he do when he was found? Why? Beowulf went looking for Grendel’s body. He decapitated Grendel completely. He does this for vengeance and to make sure that he is dead.
What did the warriors think had happened to Beowulf? The warriors thought that Beowulf had died because of the way that the lake looked.
Who went home? Who stayed? The Danes gave up left the lake and went home with Hrothgar. The Geats stayed waiting to hope that Beowulf would reemerge.
What did Beowulf bring back? Grendel’s head, and the hilt of the giant sword.
What happened to the blade of the sword? The blade had melted in Grendel’s blood.
How many men did it take to carry Grendel’s head? It took four men to carry Grendel’s head. It was too heavy for less men than that to carry. It took only Beowulf to carry it up from the bottom of the lake. Beowulf’s helmet is taken back too.
