DefinitionVocabulary Word
Each in the order given. Respectively - The cat and the dog ate cat food and dog food respectively.
Savagely cruel; brutal. Barbarous - The pirates were a barbarous group of villains who attacked civilian ships.
Showing religious devotion. Pious- The pious young girl said her prayers every night.
To criticize sharply. Rebuke- The teacher rebuked the student for talking too much.
Not thorough; shallow Superficial - The student's essay was very superficial; it seemed to have been written in a hurry.
Settled and steady; dully serious Staid- The staid soldiers waited for the battle to begin.
One who accepts events as inevitable, believing that fate controls everything. Fatalist - The fatalist would not buy a lottery ticket, since he thought that if he was meant to win the lottery, it would simply happen.
Release from oppression or slavery; liberation. Emancipation - The emancipation of the slaves was historical.
Uninterested or unconcerned. Aloof - The aloof student stared out the window while the teacher lectured.
Fire-causing Incendiary- The dry weather is causing very incendiary conditions. Watch out for forest fires!
Angered by injustice or unfairness. Indignant- The girl was indignant when she heard that she would be punished for something her sister did.
Skillful; expert Proficient- My CSAP scores show that I am proficient in reading and writing!
Unchangeable; irreversible Irrevocable- My decision is made; it is my irrevocable final decision.
Flirtatious and playful Coquettish- The girl was acting coquettish around the new boy.
Hidden or kept secret Clandestine- The location of the club's clandestine hideout was never revealed.
