Vocabulary | Definition |

Conjecture | an unproven statment about a general mathematical concept |
Theorem | a proven statement about a general mathematical concept |
Equation | a statement that two expressions are equal |
Variable | the letters or symbols in an equation |
Constant | a number by itself |
Coefficient | a number attached to a variable |
Solution | a value that makes an equation true |
Inverse Operation | two operations that undo eachother |
Addition Property of Equality | adding each number to each sides of the equation: if x=b, then x+a=b+a |
Subtraction Property of Equality | subtracting: if c=w then c-p=w-p |
Multiplication Property of Equality | If c=s then c*a=s*a |
Division Property of Equality | If c=s then c/a=s/a a≠0 |
Identity | an equation that is true for all values of the variable |
Absolute Value Equation | an equation that contains an absolute value expression |
Extraneous Solution | an apparent solution that must be rejected because it does not satisfy the original equation |
Literal Equation | an equation that has two ore more variable |
Formula | a literal equation that shows how one variable is related toone or more variables |
