| Alkali metals | Group 1 on the periodic table. Highly reactive! |
| Alkaline earth metals | Group 2 on the periodic table. Highly reactive! |
| Atom | Most basic unit of matter |
| Atomic number | Number of protons in an atom of that element |
| Average atomic mass | the weighted average mass of the atoms in a naturally occurring sample of the element |
| Electron affinity | The likelihood of an element to attract an electron |
| Electrons | Negatively charged particles in an atom |
| Families | a group of elements that have certain similar properties and can form compounds with some similar properties |
| Halogens | Group 17 on the periodic table. Highly reactive! |
| Mass number | The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus |
| Neutrons | Neutral particles located in the nucleus of an atom |
| Noble gases | Group 18 of the periodic table. Non-reactive. |
| Nucleus | Positively charged center of an atom |
| Oxidation numbers | number of electrons an atom can accept or donate to form a bond with another atom |
| Protons | Positive particles located in the nucleus of an atom |
| Subatomic particles | Particles inside an atom |
| Transition metals | Groups 3-12. Good conductors. |
