Introduction to Computing Systems

TermDefinition
Hardware The physical parts of the computer which you can touch
Input The information computers get from users, devices, or other computers
Operating Software Software that manages manages computer hardware (the mouse, the keyboard) and software, and that provides common services for computer programs
Output The information computers give to users, devices, or other computers
Processing The thinking work computers do to turn input into output
Productivity Software Application software that helps users produce things, like documents, databases, presentations, spreadsheet reports, video, etc.
Software The set of instructions for the computer to run a particular task or boot up
Storage The act of saving information for later use or manipulation
RAM Computer memory that can be accessed randomly at any time, allowing quick access and manipulation
ROM Data storage that is firm, or hardwired, and cannot be easily altered or reprogrammed
