Literary Elements

| Characterization | The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. |
| Direct Characterization | Tells the audience what the personality of the character is. |
| Indirect Characterization | Shows things that reveal the personality of a character. Speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, looks. |
| Protagonist | Character the story is mainly about. |
| Antagonist | The character(s) who cause problems for the protagonist. |
| Point Of View | The perspective the story is being told from. 1st Person, 3rd Person Limited, and 3rd Person Omniscient. |
| Setting | Where the story takes place. |
| Mood | The atmosphere of the story. |
| Tone | The authors attitude toward the subject of writing/text. Can be positive, negative, or neutral. |
| Diction | The authors choice of words to tell their story. |
| Imagery | The authors description of an event, character, or setting that appeals to the five senses. |
| Irony | What you think will happen is the opposite of what happens. |
| Foreshadowing | Hints that help the reader predict what is to come in a story. |
| Suspense | The quality that keeps a reader interested in the story. |
| Symbol | Something that represents something else. |
| Motif | An object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work, and contributes toward the development of a theme. |
| Theme | The central message or lesson the author is trying to get across. |
| Elements Of Plot | The exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. |
| Internal Conflict | Person vs Self; a difficult decision being made. |
| External Conflict | Conflict made by an external force. |
