Literary Elements

QuestionAnswer
Characterization The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
Direct Characterization Tells the audience what the personality of the character is.
Indirect Characterization Shows things that reveal the personality of a character. Speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, looks.
Protagonist Character the story is mainly about.
Antagonist The character(s) who cause problems for the protagonist.
Point Of View The perspective the story is being told from. 1st Person, 3rd Person Limited, and 3rd Person Omniscient.
Setting Where the story takes place.
Mood The atmosphere of the story.
Tone The authors attitude toward the subject of writing/text. Can be positive, negative, or neutral.
Diction The authors choice of words to tell their story.
Imagery The authors description of an event, character, or setting that appeals to the five senses.
Irony What you think will happen is the opposite of what happens.
Foreshadowing Hints that help the reader predict what is to come in a story.
Suspense The quality that keeps a reader interested in the story.
Symbol Something that represents something else.
Motif An object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work, and contributes toward the development of a theme.
Theme The central message or lesson the author is trying to get across.
Elements Of Plot The exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Internal Conflict Person vs Self; a difficult decision being made.
External Conflict Conflict made by an external force.
