2.1 Vocabulary

Relations and Functions

TermDefinition
Relation a set of pairs of input and output values
Domain the set of all inputs; x-values
Range the set of all outputs; y-values
Function a relation in which each element of the domain corresponds with exactly one element of the range
Vertical-line test if a vertical line passes through more than one point on the graph of a relation, then the relation is not a function
Function Rule an equation that represents an output value in terms of an input value
Function Notation f(x) , read as "f of x" or "function of x"
Independent Variable x; represents the input of the function
Dependent Variable y; represents the output of the function
