Unit 1 Government
Types of Government
| Term | Definition |

| Government | the ruling authority for a community |
| Communism | a government ruled by one political party that owns all means of production, citizens to not have rights to private ownership |
| Anarchy | Absence of law or government; chaos, disorder |
| Oligarchy | a government ruled by a few powerful people, the majority of the people have no say in the government |
| Republic | citizens elect representatives to act on their behalf, also known as a republic |
| Totalitarianism | Government control over every aspect of public and private life |
| Tyranny | a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler |
| Dictatorship | A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.) |
| Monarchy | form of government in which there is one supreme authority. Power is usually inherited. In modern times powers can vary. |
| Magna Carta | a document guaranteeing English political liberties |
| English Bill of Rights | An Act Declaring the Rights and Liberties of the Subject and Settling the Succession of the Crown |
| State | a community formed by people and exercising permanent power within a specified territory. |
| Sovereignty | Ability of a state to govern its territory free from control of its internal affairs by other states. |
| Direct Democracy | A system of government in which political decisions are made by the people directly, rather than by their elected representatives; probably attained most easily in small political communities. |
| Democracy | a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. |
