Unit 1 Government

Types of Government

TermDefinition
Government the ruling authority for a community
Communism a government ruled by one political party that owns all means of production, citizens to not have rights to private ownership
Anarchy Absence of law or government; chaos, disorder
Oligarchy a government ruled by a few powerful people, the majority of the people have no say in the government
Republic citizens elect representatives to act on their behalf, also known as a republic
Totalitarianism Government control over every aspect of public and private life
Tyranny a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler
Dictatorship A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)
Monarchy form of government in which there is one supreme authority. Power is usually inherited. In modern times powers can vary.
Magna Carta a document guaranteeing English political liberties
English Bill of Rights An Act Declaring the Rights and Liberties of the Subject and Settling the Succession of the Crown
State a community formed by people and exercising permanent power within a specified territory.
Sovereignty Ability of a state to govern its territory free from control of its internal affairs by other states.
Direct Democracy A system of government in which political decisions are made by the people directly, rather than by their elected representatives; probably attained most easily in small political communities.
Democracy a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
