| Nosocomial | Means the infection occured inside a hospital or health care facility. |
| Asepsis | Absence of disease producing organsims. |
| Sterilization | Process that destroys all organsisms including spores and viruses-no germs. |
| Contaminated | Means organisms and pathogens are present. |
| Disinfection | Process that destroys or kills pathogenic organisms but is not always effective against spores and viruses. |
| PPE | Personal Protective equipment such as gowns,gloves,masks. |
| Standard Precautions | Rules developed by the CDC to treat all body fluids as a potential source of infection. |
| Contact Precautions | Gown and Gloves- Pt has known disease spread by contact (MRSA or VRE wound) |
| Droplet Precautions | Standard Precautions plus standard surgical mask- Pt has known disease spread by large droplets (Flu, Pneumonia) |
| Airborne Precautions | Standard Precautions plus N95 or Respirator mask- Pt has known disease spread by tiny lingering droplets in the Air (Tuberculosis, Chickenpox) |
| Opportunistic Infections | Person gets because their body defenses are down (burn victim, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, decreased immune system) |
| Vehicle borne | Spread in air, food, water |
| Vector borne | Spread by insects,mosquitoes, ticks, fleas |
| Bloodborne pathogens | Spread by blood and body fluids (HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B, C) |
