Biology Chapter 1 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
the act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way. Observation
is a logical interpretation based on what scientists already know. Inference
scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested in ways to support or reject it. Hypothesis
an experiment in which one variable is changed and all other variables are kept unchanged. Controlled Experiment
the variable deliberately changed, it's also called the manipulated variable. Independent Variable
the variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable. Dependent Variable
is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes in the independent variable. Control Group
detailed records of observations gathering information; the two types are quantitative and qualitative. Data
well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations and hypotheses. Theory
a particular preference or point of view that is personal rather than scientific. Bias
the study of life. Biology
cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism. Sexual Reproduction
a single organism produces offspring identical to itself. Asexual Reproduction
this genetic code, with a few minor variations, determines the inherited traits of every organism on Earth. Molecule that contains the genetic code where all organisms store the information that they need to live, grow, and reproduce. DNA
the combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials. Metabolism
is a signal to which an organism responds. Stimulus
organisms need to keep their internal environment relatively stable even when external conditions change dramatically. Homeostasis
change over time. Evolve
an organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world. Science
