Place Value
Term | Definition |

place value | determines the value of the digit in a number, based on its position. |
period | place value groups of 3-digit places separated by commas; each group has ones, tens, and hundreds |
digit | in the base 10 system, any of the symbols: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9; digits are used to write numbers |
decimal | represented by a dot that separates whole numbers and decimal numbers |
standard form | a way to write a number using digits |
word form | a way to write numbers using words |
expanded form | a way to write numbers by representing the value of each place using addition |
expanded notation | a way to write numbers by using a number to show the value of each digit; represented by using both multiplication and addition |
compare | when one number is the same as, smaller than, or bigger than another number |
order | putting things into their correct place following a certain rule (example: greatest to least) |
