Chapter 8 Vocab
| Term | Definition |

| absolute value | The distance between the number and zero |
| axis axes | The horizontal or vertical lines that create the coordinate plane |
| Celsius | Measure of temperature in which water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees |
| coordinate plane | A two-dimensional surface formed by two intersecting and perpendicular number lines |
| credit | Money that is added to an account |
| debit | To take money from an account |
| debt | Money that you owe |
| decimal | A fraction whose denominator is a power of ten and whose numerator is expressed by digits placed to the right of a decimal point |
| distance | The length between two points |
| electron | A very small particle of matter that has a negative charge of electricity |
| elevation | Vertical distance between the local surface of the earth and sea level. Elevations are positive or negative, above or below sea level respectively |
| equal | A symbol showing that one amount is the same value as another amount |
| Fahrenheit | Measure of temperature where water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees |
| fraction | A way of describing equal parts. AND An unfinished division |
| graph of an inequality | Shows all the solutions on a number line using a ray with an open or closed endpoint |
| horizontal | Parallel to the horizon. Horizontal lines go from left to right |
| inequality | A comparison of values >, greater than or equal to, <, less than or equal to, not equal to |
| integer | An integer is a number that can be written without a fractional component. For example: 21, 4, 0 and -2048 are integers, while 9.75 and 5 1/2 are not |
| is greater than | Used to compare two numbers when the first number is larger than the second number |
| is greater than or equal to | Used when the first number has a greater value or an equal value or an equal value than the second number |
| is less than | Used to compare two numbers when the first number is smaller than the second number |
| is less than or equal to | Used when the first number has a smaller value or an equal value than the second number |
| Kelvin | An international measure of temperature |
| line graph | A graph that uses line segments to connect data points |
| line segment | Part of line with 2 endpoints that make it stop |
| location | Where something is |
| mixed number | A way to show how many wholes are how many extra parts there are in all whole and extra/equal parts |
| negative number | A negative number is a real number that is less than zero |
| number line | A diagram that represents numbers as points on a line |
| opposite of a number | Equally far away from zero |
