Chapter 3 Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Axis/Axes | The horizontal or vertical lines that create the coordinate plane |
| Constant Speed | The speed (quotient of distance and time) is not changing |
| Coordinate plane | Formed by a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertial number line, called the y-axis. The two axes intersect at a point called the origin |
| Diagram | A drawing that explains and shows information |
| Distance | The length between two points |
| Double number line | When the zeros align, the vertical values create equivalent ratios |
| Equivalent | Equal in value, but not necessarily looking the same |
| Equivalent Rates | Rates that are equal in value |
| Equivalent Ratios | Ratios that are equal in value |
| Graph | A display of data |
| Horizontal axis | The axis that goes across left to right and is parallel with the horizon |
| Ordered pair | Describes the location of a single point on a grid |
| Per | For each OR for Every |
| Rate | A ratio comparing two different units |
| Ratio | The comparison of two quantities (e.g. the ratio of a and b is a:b or a to be where b does not equal 0) |
| Ratio table | A table of values where there exists a constant ratio between the y- and the x-values |
| Table | A data display |
| Tape Diagram | Tape diagrams, also called bar models, are pictorial representations of relationships using rectangles |
| Tick Mark | Marks on a ruler or other measurement tool |
| Unit Analysis | A procedure to convert measurements |
| Unit Price | The cost per 1 unit |
| Unit Rate | A comparison of two measurements in which the second term has a value of 1. A rate with a denominator of 1 |
| Value of a ratio | The value after the two quantities of the ratio are divided |
| Venn diagram | A diagram that shows how parts of two or more sets are related |
| Vertical axis | The axis that goes up and down |
| X-coordinate | The horizontal value in a pair of coordinates. The first number. |
| Y-coordinate | The vertical value in a pair of coordinates. The second number |
