Chapter 2 Vocab

TermDefinition
Approximate Close in value or amount but not precise
Decimal A fraction whose denominator is a power of ten and whose numerator is expressed by digits placed to the right of a decimal point
Decimal Point The period that separates the whole from the parts (whole.parts)
Denominator The bottom number of a fraction that tells how many EQUAL pieces are needed to make a whole
Difference The result when one number is subtracted from another OR how two amounts are not equal
Dividend A quantity to be shared, divided or equally parted out
Divisor The number of equal shares or size of each group to be taken from the whole
Equivalent Fraction Equal in value
Estimate Using compatible numbers or rounding then calculating. An estimate tells about how much or about how many
Evaluate To determine the value
Exact No rounding, no estimating, no unused digits, no remainster. PRECISE
Expression A mathematical phrase without an equal sign
Fraction A way of describing equal parts. AND An unfinished division
Hundredths The digit 2 places to the right of the decimal. A very small amount
Improper Fraction A numerator is greater than the denominator. And enough equal parts to fill at least one whole with some left over
Mixed Number A way to show how many wholes and how many equal parts there are in all whole and extra/equal parts
Model Picture showing how things work or compare
Multiplicative Inverses A number and its reciprocal whose product = 1
Numerator The top number of a fraction. The numerator tells how many equal pieces you have
Overestimate An estimate that is greater than the actual value of a problem
Parentheses Used in mathematics as grouping symbols for operations. When simplifying an expression, the operations within the parentheses are performed first
Place Value The value a digit has because of its place in a number
Portion Part of something
Product The answer to a multiplication problem
Proper Fraction Not enough equal parts to fill one whole. And the numerator is less than the denominator
Quotient The answer to a division problem.
Reasonable Checked using another method; agrees with other facts
Reciprocal One or two numbers whose product is 1
Remainder The part left over after division or subtraction
Simplest Form The numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1
Sum The answer to an addition problem
Tape Diagram Tape diagrams, also called bar models, are pictoral representations of relationships using rectrangles
Tenths The digit 1 place to the right of the decimal. A small amount
Thousandths The digit 3 places to the right of the decimal. A very, very small amount
Times as many Comparing using multiplication or division
Underestimate An estimate that is less than the actual value of a problem
Unit Fraction A fraction with a 1 in the numerator
Unknown number; Unknown value The missing value
