| democracy | The rule of the many |
| Participatory (direct) democracy | A government in which all or most citizens participate directly |
| Representative democracy | A government in which leaders make decisions by winning a competitive struggle for the popular vote |
| Pluralist democracy | Describes a political system where there is more than one center of power. |
| Elite democracy | Model of democracy in which a small number of people, usually those who are wealthy and well-educated, influence political decision making. |
| class view | Less dogmatic and emphasizes the power of the rich or the leaders of multinational corporations |
| power elite view | View that the government is dominated by a few top leaders most of whom are outside of government |
| bureaucratic view | View that the government is dominated by appointed officials |
| pluralist view | View that competition among all the affected interests shapes public policy |
| Creedal passion view | View that morally impassioned elites drive important political changes. |
| political agenda | Issues that people believe require governmental action |
| policy entrepreneurs | Activists in or out of government who pull together a political majority on behalf of unorganized interests |
| Limited Government | Government is one where legalized force is restricted through delegated and enumerated authorities. |
| Natural Rights | Those that are not dependent on the laws, customs, or beliefs of any particular culture or government, and are therefore universal and inalienable |
| Popular Sovereignty | The principle that the authority of a state and its government are created and sustained by the consent of its people, who are the source of all political power. |
| Republicanism | Political ideology centred on citizenship in a state organized as a republic. |
