Exploring Real-Life Phenomena through Statistics
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Box Plot | A visual display of the distribution of data values using the median, quartiles, and extremes of the data set. A box shows the middle 50% of the data. |
Categorical Data | Categorical variables represent types of data which may be divided into groups. Examples of categorical variables are race, sex, age group, and educational level. |
Distribution | the action of sharing something out among a number of recipients. |
Dot Plot | A method of visually displaying a distribution of data values where each data value is shown as a dot or mark above a number line. Also known as a line plot. |
Frequency | the number of times the data value occurs |
Histogram | a diagram consisting of rectangles whose area is proportional to the frequency of a variable and whose width is equal to the class interval. |
Variability | how spread out of closely clustered a set of data is. |
Interquartile Range | A measure of variation in a set of numerical data, the distance between the first and third quartiles of the data set. |
Statistics | a branch of applied mathematics that involves the collection, description, analysis, and inference of conclusions from quantitative data. |
Maximum Value | The largest value taken by the function. |
Minimum Value | The smallest value taken by the function. |
Statistical Question | a question that can be answered by collecting data that varies. |
Skewed Data | data that tends to have a long tail on one side or the other. |
Mean | The measure of center in a set of numerical data. |
Range | the difference between the lowest and highest value in a set of data. |
Measures of Center | A value that attempts to describe a set of data by identifying the central position of the data set. |
Outlier | a value in a data set that is very different from the other values (usually far from the middle). |
Measures of Spread | describes how similar or varied the set of observed values are for a particular variable (data item). |
Numerical Data | The data that is in the form of numbers, and not in any language of descriptive form. |
Median | A measure of center in a set of numerical data, the value appearing at the center of a sorted version of the list. |
Mode | The most frequent number-that is, the number that occurs the highest number of times. |
