Therapeutic service careers: Focus on changing the health status of an individual over time.
Diagnostic service careers: focus on capturing a picture of the status of a patient at a specified time period as a measure to assist in detection and diagnosis
Health Informatics Services Careers: Some have more patient interaction than others; administrative personnel responsible for the management of facilities, patient and financial information
Environmental Support Services: Provide support to other healthcare personnel by providing an environment that is safe and conducive to the delivery of quality healthcare services -Dietary Manager, Environmental Services (housekeeping/janitorial), Interpreter, Biohazard Cleanup,
Biotechnology and Research Development service careers: Examples: Clinical Pharmacologist, Laboratory Technician, Research Scientist, Forensic Science Technician
Medical specialties: Examples: cardiologist, dermatologist, oncologist, etc. (know which diseases medical specialties diagnosis/treat DHO textbook pg. 55)
multicompetent/multiskilled worker workers who can perform a variety of health care skills
Professional Organizations Individuals benefit greatly by becoming members and being in close contact with other individuals in the same profession
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are required to renew licenses or maintain certification or registration in many states.
Aid or Assistant 1-2 years in HSE program, associate's degree, or 2-4 years of on-the-job training -Dental assistant, medical assistant, nurse assistant
Technician 2 year associate's degree, special health science tech education or 3 - 4 years of on the job training - Dental laboratory technician, Medical Laboratory technician (MLT), surgical technician
Technologist or Therapist 3 - 4 years of college plus work experience, usually bachelor's and at time master's degree - Medical laboratory, technologist (MT), speech therapist, respiratory therapist
Professional 4 or more years of college w/ a bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree -Medical doctor, dentist, pharmacist
Accreditation process by which an educational program is evaluated and then recognized as having met certain predetermined standards of education -Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), (ABHES)
Licensure A government agency authorizes individuals to work in a given occupation. The license clearly defines the scope of practice. -Dentist, Physician, Physical Therapist
Registration: A regulatory body (professional association or state board) administers examinations and maintains a current list "registry" of qualified personnel in a given healthcare area -Registered Dietitian
Certification: Professional association/government agency regulates a particular career
(NCHSE) a health science career cluster that allows students to explore & prepare for a healthcare career
Post-secondary education: after high school education (career/technical school, university, accredited programs) National Consortium for Health Science Education
Health Science Program prepare a student for employment in healthcare/education after graduation
Empathy identifying with another’s feelings but being unable to change or solve the situation
Honesty: Truthfulness and integrity
Dependability: Truthfulness and intecapable of being relied on; trustworthyrity
Willingness to learn curious, always want to know more
Patience ability to wait, persevere; capacity for calm endurance
Acceptance of criticism: being able to learn from others critics.
Enthusiasm: intense interest or excitement
Self-motivation ability to begin or to follow through with a task without the assistance of others.
Tact: able to do or say the correct thing; thoughtful
Responsibility: being held accountable for actions or behaviors; willing to meet obligations
Discretion: ability to to use good judgment and self-restraint in speech or behavior.
Professionalism: a blending of many different personal qualities (judgment, polite behavior, courtesy, good communication skills, honesty, politeness, responsibility, integrity, competence, and a proper appearance to meet the standards expected in a healthcare career.
Team player/teamwork: organize, delegate, and coordinate
Leadership ability to lead, guide, and direct others
Democratic leader: someone who asks for the opinion of others for the next step.
Laissez-faire leader: someone that steps back and lets the people solve problems by themselves.
Transformational leader: someone that wants to change the world.
Transactional leader someone that rewards their employees after they finish a task. Boss and employee.
Stewardship leader: concentrate on serving the needs of others rather than the self-interest of obtaining power and control over others
Therapeutic service careers: Examples: Athletic Trainer, Dentist, EMT, Mortician, Physician, Veterinarian, Occupational Therapist, Pharmacist, SLP
Diagnostic service careers: Examples: Cardiovascular Technician, Phlebotomist, Radiologic Technician
Certification: - Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Personal Trainer
Licensure -Dentist, Physician, Physical Therapist
