What is a converter dollie | It is a coupling device of one or two axles and a fifth wheel by which a semitrailer can be coupled to the rear of a tractortrailer combination forming a double bottom rig |
Do converter follows have springs? | Yes |
What three methods can you use to secure a second trailer before couple? | Connect the emergency line, charge the trailer air tank, and disconnect the emergency line. Spring brakes Wheel chocks |
How do you make sure a trailer height is correct before coupling? | must be slightly lower than the center of the fifth wheel, so trailer is raised slightly when dolly is pushed under |
What do you check when making a visual check of coupling? | No space between upper and lower fifth wheel. Locking jaws closed on kingpin. Make sure fifth wheel is greased properly |
Why should you pull a dolly out from under a trailer before you disconnect it from the trailer in front? | The dolly tow bar may fly up, possibly causing injury, and making it very difficult to re-couple. |
What should you check for when inspecting the converter dolly? The pintle hook? | If spare tire is carried on converter gear (dolly), make sure it's secured. 2) Pintle hook is latched. |
Should the shut-off valves on the rear of the last trailer be open or closed? On the first trailer in a set of doubles? On the middle trailer of a set of triples? | Closed; open; open |
How can you test that air flows to all trailers? | Wait for air pressure to reach normal, then push in the red "trailer air supply" knob. This will supply air to the emergency (supply) lines. Use the trailer handbrake to provide air to the service line. Go to the rear of the rig. Open the emergency line s |
How do you know if your converter dolly has antilock brakes? | There’s a yellow indicator on the left side |
How are bulkheads different than baffles? | Some liquid tanks are divided into several smaller tanks by bulkheads Baffled liquid tanks have bulkheads in them with holes that let the liquid flow through |
Should a tank vehicle take curves, on ramps, or off ramps at the posted speed limits? | Absolutely not Slow down before curves, then accelerate slightly through the curve. The posted speed for a curve may be too fast for a tank vehicle... NO |
How are smooth bore tankers different to drive than those with baffles? | Un-baffled liquid tankers (sometimes called "smooth bore" tanks) have nothing inside to slow down the flow of the liquid. Therefore, forward-and back surge is very strong |
What three things determine how much liquid you can load | • The amount the liquid will expand in transit. • The weight of the liquid. • Legal weight limits. |
What is outage | Liquids expand as they warm and you must leave room for the expanding liquid. This is called "outage” |
What two reasons make special care necessary when driving tank vehicles? | High center of gravity and liquid movement |
How can you control a surge | Avoid speeding, drive with caution |
