Planes of Motion

QuestionAnswer
Frontal plane: other names Lateral plane or Coronal plane
Horizontal Plane: other names Transverse Plane
Sagittal Plane: Other names Anterioposterior Plane
Oblique Plane: Other names Diagonal Plane
Sagittal / Anterioposterior plane passes vertically through the body from front to back
Frontal/Lateral/Coronal plane passes vertically through the body from side to side
Horizontal / Transverse plane passes horizontally through the middle of the body
Sagittal plane divides the body into left and right sides.
What type of movement occurs in the sagittal plane? Anterioposterior movement e.g flexion of the spine, nodding of the head
Frontal plane divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior).
What type of movement occurs in the frontal plane? Abduction and adduction movements occur in this plane, eg jumping jack exercises, raising and lowering arms and legs sideways, cartwheel.
Horizontal plane divides the body into upper and lower half.
What type of movement occurs in the horizontal plane? Rotation types of movement occur in this plane, eg hip rotation in a golf swing, twisting in a discus throw, pivoting in netball, spinning in skating.
