Unit 1 Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
ratio | a comparison of two quantities using division, which can be written 3 ways ex. 5/7, 5:7, 5 to 7 |
rate | a ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units ex. 20 miles in 2 hours |
unit rate | a comparison of two measurements in which the denominator is 1- divide to find unit rate ex. 10 flowers to 2 vases 10/2 = 5 The unit rate is 5 flowers/ 1 vase. |
mixed number | a number that has a whole number and a fraction. ex. 2 1/2 |
improper fraction | a fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator. ex. 3/2 |
reciprocal | when you flip a fraction; the numerator and denominator switch places. ex. the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2 |
complex fraction | a rate comparing two fractions ex. 1/2 / 2/3 |
better buy | Calculate the unit rates (money/items) to compare which item is the better buy (lower unit price). |
better buy example | 1.) $10 for 2 notebooks= 10/2 $5/notebook 2) $9 for 3 notebooks= 9/3 $3/notebook Option 2 is the better buy (lower unit rate) |
proportion | an equation that states that two ratios are equal to each other. ex. 2/3 = 4/6 |
equivalent ratios | ratios that have the same part-to-part or part-to-whole relationship. 2/3 and 4/6 are equivalent |
scale | the ratio of the length in a drawing, model, or map to the length on the real thing ex. 1 inch = 557 miles |
scale factor | The ratio of corresponding sides in a figure: new/original ex. The distance between two cities is 56 km. On a map, the distance is 4 cm. The scale factor is 56/4 = 14 km/cm |
scale drawing | can be used to represent two- and three- dimensional objects. ex. map, blueprint |
englargement | a scale factor greater than 1 ex. A model of a cell is an enlargement. |
reduction | a scale factor less than 1 ex. A map in a reduction. |
similar figures | shapes that have the same ratio or scale factor. ex. when you reduce or enlarge an image, they are similar |
proportional | two quantities that have a constant rate or unit rate Graph is always a straight line (linear) and goes through the origin |
non-proportional | two quantities that do not have a constant rate or unit rate |
constant of proportionality (COP) | the constant rate by which proportional relationships increase, can be found by dividing y by x |
origin | The starting point on a graph., where the x- and y- axes meet. (0, 0) |
