Define Primary health care Primary health care (PHC) is “essential health care for people that is practical, socially acceptable and  uses scientifically sound methods and technology” (WHO, 1978).
What does primary health care focus on whole-of-society focusing on people’s needs
whole-of-society approach to health that aims at ensuring the highest possible level of health and well-being and their equitable distribution by
focusing on people’s needs and as early as possible along the continuum from health promotion and disease prevention to treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care, and as close as feasible to people’s everyday environment." (WHO & UNICEF, 2021).
Components of primary health care Meeting people’s health needs throughout their lives Addressing the broader determinants of health through multi sectoral policy and action Empowering individuals, families and communities to take charge of their own health.
Principals -Equitable distribution-Equal access, power and outcomes for all -Community participation - Inter-sectoral coordination - Appropriate technology

8A's -Appropriateness -Availability -Adequacy -Adequacy -Acceptability -Affordability -Accessibility
Appropriateness Primary health care should be appropriate for a specific purpose and person, and should address essential human needs, priorities, and policies.
Availability Sufficient supply of resources e.g. equipment Competent and skilled health workers (human resource).E.g. TB drugs, DOT worker Midwifery: trained midwife, Doppler device.
Adequacy Adequacy in primary health care means the ability to provide reasonable health care services to meet the needs and demands of the community and country.
Accessibility Acceptability is an important aspect of primary health care, referring to whether something is socially pleasing, agreeable, appropriate, or tolerable. Concerns about the introduction of new vaccines
Acceptability of primary health care depends on - Cultural sensitivity of health technology and intervention. - User friendly environment and convenient. - Treatment of all persons with dignity. - Maintaining confidentiality and privacy
- **Affordability** a person/community is able to pay for health care Health care is cheap enough for persons to afford it
Assessability: Systems should be able to be evaluated
3C's Completeness Continuity Comprehensiveness
- **Completeness-** Primary health care should be complete, meaning it should cover prevention, screening, early diagnosis, treatment, follow-up measures, and rehabilitation without any restrictions. the quality of being whole or perfect and having nothing missing.
- **Continuity** Continuous healthcare management focusing on achieving high quality, cost effective medical care. Important for chronic diseases: diabetes, hypertension
- **Comprehensiveness** . Primary health care should provide care for all types of health problems, including emotional support, over a period of time and in relation to the patient's family.
