cervicitis Inflammation of the cervix
cesarean section The delivery of the child through an incision in the maternal abdominal and uterine walls; also known as a cesarean delivery or a C-section.
chlamydia A sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.
circumcision Surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis that is usually performed a few days after birth.
colposcopy Direct visual examination of the tissues of the cervix and vagina using a binocular magnifier called a colposcope
curettage The removal of material from the surface by scraping
dilation the expansion of an opening
dysmenorrhea Abdominal pain caused by uterine cramps during a menstrual period.
eclampsia During pregnancy, a more serious form of preeclampsia characterized by convulsions and sometimes coma.
ectopic pregnancy The condition in which a fertilized egg is implanted and begins to develop outside of the uterus; also known as an extrauterine pregnancy.
endocervicitis Inflammation of the mucous membrane lining of the cervix.
endometriosis A condition in which patches of endometrial tissue escape the uterus and become attached to other structures in the pelvic cavity
epididymitis Inflammation of the epididymis; also called epididymo-orchitis.
episiorrhaphy Surgical suturing to repair an episiotomy.
episiototmy A surgical incision of the perineum and vagina to facilitate delivery and prevent laceration of the tissues.
fibrocystic breast disease The presence of single or multiple cysts in the breasts.
gonorrhea A sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
gynecologist The condition of excessive mammary development in the male.
human papilloma virus vaccine is available to prevent the spread of this disease. It is recommended that it be administered to girls between the ages 11 and 12 or before they become sexually active.
hypomenorrhea A small amount of menstrual flow during a shortened regular menstrual period.
hysterectomy The surgical removal of the uterus that may, or may not, include removal of the cervix.
hysteropexy the surgical fixation of a misplaced or abnormally movable uterus
hysterosalpingography A radiographic examination of the uterus and fallopian tubes following the instillation of radiopaque material
hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy the surgical removal of the uterus and cervix, plus both ovaries and fallopian tubes.
hysteroscopy The direct visual examination of the interior of the uterus and fallopian tubes using the magnification of a hysteroscope
leiomyoma A benign tumor composed of muscle and fibrous tissue that occurs in the wall of the uterus; also known as a fibroid.
leukorrhea A profuse whitish mucus discharge from the uterus and vagina.
mammography A radiographic screening examination of the breast to detect the presence of cancer.
mammoplasty Surgical repair or restructuring of the breast; also spelled mammaplasty.
menarche the beginning of the menstrual function that begins at puberty
menometrorrhagia Excessive uterine bleeding occurring both during the menses and at irregular intervals between periods.
menopause the normal stopping of the monthly menstrual periods, which officially begins 12 months after a woman's final menstrual period, occurs at the average age of 52
menstruation menses, the normal periodic discharge of a bloody fluid from the nonpregnant uterus
metrorrhea An abnormal discharge, such as mucus or pus, from the uterus.

papanicolaou test An exfoliative biopsy to screen for early indications of cervical cancer; also known as a Pap smear.

salpingo-oophorectomy The surgical removal of a fallopian tube and ovary.
syphilis A sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
trichomonas A sexually transmitted disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis
vaginal candidiasis A fungal infection of the vagina caused by Candida albicans; also known as vaginal thrush or as a yeast infection
vaginoplasty surgical repair of the vagina
varicocele A knot of varicose veins in one side of the scrotum
varicocelectomy The removal of a portion of an enlarged vein to relieve a varicocele.
vasectomy The male sterilization procedure in which a small portion of the vas deferens is surgically removed
vasovasostomy A procedure performed as an attempt to restore fertility to a vasectomized male; also known as a vasectomy reversal.
