| temp agency | a company that finds temporary work for workers and provides workers for employers on a short-term basis - staffing agency |
| hire and fire | the practice of frequently employing people and then making them redundant (letting them go) - recruit and dismiss |
| let people go | to terminate the employment of an individual or individuals - make redundant, lay off |
| give notice | to formally tell your employer that you are leaving your job - resign |
| redundancy payments | money that a company must pay to workers who are made redundant - severance pay |
| unemployment benefits | money that a government pays to unemployed people who are looking for work - jobseeker's allowance, unemployment insurance |
| trade unions | an organized association of workers in a trade, group of trades, or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests - labour unions, worker's union |
| labour unions | an organization that represents workers' rights and interests to their employers - trade unions, worker's union |
| sick pay | money paid by an employer to an employee who cannot work because of illness - sickness benefit |
| parental leave | time off from work, either paid or unpaid, that parents are allowed to take when they have a child - family leave |
| maternity leave | time off work allowed for a woman when she is about to have or has just had a baby - pregnancy leave |
| paternity leave | time off work granted to a father after or shortly before the birth of his child - father's leave |
