| Central idea/ main idea | what the text is mainly about |
| Figurative language | imaginative language that is not meant to be interpreted literally |
| Literary device | specific techniques that allow a writer to convey a deeper meaning that goes beyond what's on the page |
| Simile | a comparison between unlike things that uses like or as |
| Personification | a kind of a metaphor that gives objects or abstract ideas human qualities |
| Cause/ Effect | the relationship between two things when one thing makes something else happen |
| Context Clues | Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to help him/ her understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words. |
| Purpose | the reason for writing; what the writer hopes to accomplish |
| Conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| Internal Conflict | the character struggles with his/ her own needs, desires, and emotions. (character vs. self) |
| External Conflict | the character struggles with an outside force such as another character, society, nature, technology, etc. |
| Characterization | the methods a writer uses to develop characters: descriptions, actions, and dialogue |
| Alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words that are close together |
| Hyperbole | extreme exaggeration used for emphasis, often for comic effect |
| Imagery | descriptive or figurative language used to create word pictures; imagery is created by details that appeal to one or more of the five senses |
| Theme | the central message/ lesson of a literary work |
| Plot | the sequence of related events that make up a story or a novel |
| Exposition | events that give the reader the background information they need to understand the story |
| Rising Action | major events that develop the plot of the story and lead to the climax |
| Climax | the turning point, or high point, of the story |
| Falling Action | events after the climax of the story, but before the resolution |
| Resolution/ Denouement | the outcome of the conflict of a story, when the loose ends are wrapped up |
| Metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things that does not use like or as |
