| characterization | the creation and development of characters, the people who carry on the action in a literary work |
| theme | universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature. |
| Simile | The comparison of two ideas using the words "like" or "as". |
| Metaphor | Metaphor - The comparison of two ideas without using the words "like" or "as". |
| Personification | A description of animals or inanimate objects as having human qualities or behaviors. |
| Hyperbole | An exaggeration used to create a specific effect. |
| external conflict | A conflict that can be witnessed by others |
| internal conflict. | A conflict that takes place within a person's thoughts or emotions |
| Exposition | The beginning of the story, usually in which the setting and protagonist are introduced. |
| Inciting Action | The scene in which the main conflict in the story begins, |
| Rising Action | A series of actions and scenes that keep building tension, makes up the majority of a story. |
| Climax | The most important and exciting scene in a story, |
| Falling Action | immediate aftermath of the events that take place during the climax, tension is relieved. |
| Resolution | final scenes in a story, |
| plot curve | series of events, throughout the course of a story, drawn in the shape of a curve. |
| Imagery | visual pictures in the reader’s mind |
| Forshadowing | what will happen in the future of a literary work |
| point of view | the angle from which the story is told |
