Sullivan Statistics - Informed Decisions Using Data
| Term | Definition |

| mean, median, & mode | The three most widely-used measures of central tendency. (averages) |
| mean | The measure of center is computed by adding all the values of the variable in the data set and dividing by the number of observations. |
| sample mean | statistic: x - bar |
| population mean | parameter: μ (mew) |
| median | The value that lies in the middle of the data when arranged in ascending order. |
| resistant | When a statistic is not effected substantially by extreme values. |
| mode | The most repeated value that occurs in the data set. |
| bimodal | A data set that has two modes. |
| no mode | A data set with no repeated values. |
| dispersion | The degree to which the data are spread out. |
| range | The difference between the largest data value and the smallest data values. |
| weighted mean | Calculated by multiplying each value of the variable by its corresponding weight, adding these products, and dividing this sum by the sum of the weights. |
| range and standard deviation. | The two most common methods of measuring spread or how much the data varies. |
