Give two examples of the boys initially lving by civilised rules from their old life. They call their meetings "assemblies". They take turns to hold the conch to speak.
What are Jack and the Hunters up to when they let the fire go out? They are hunting.
Give an example of one of the first acts of violence in the book. Whn Piggy reminds Jack it was his duty to look after the fire, Jack hits him in the face.
Golding describes the death of Simon using the words "tearing of teeth and claws". What is Golding trying to suggest about the boys who kill Simon? He descibes it in this way as if to say the boys were animals.
What does the Conch symbolise? What does it symbolise when the Conch gets chrushed? The onch symbolises civilisation, authority and order. It being destroyed shows that all civilisation, authority and order have gone.
Give two examples of primitive rituals the boys adopt. They dance and chant a lot and becomes a ritual. They make a ritual offering to the Beast every time they go hunting to calm it.
What does Jack find pleasing about painting his face? He thinks it frees him from civilised rules and embarrassment. It proveides a "liberation into savagery".
What do you think the Naval Officer's clean, white uniform is supposed to represent? He is dissapointed the boys couldn't "put up a better show". However, he is representing a world at war, just like the boys.
Give an example that shows one of the boys realising that savagery is taking over. Piggy realises the hatred in Jack.
Describe the first mention of any sort of "Beast". A littun says he has seen "a snake thing". Then he calls it a "Beast" and says it came from the dark to eat him.
In the assembly that talks about everyone's fear of the "Beast", what point does Simon make? He says the only thing they should fear is the savagery and evil in human nature. He says the "Beast" is "only us". When he thinks of the "Beast" he thinks of a human - "heroic and sick".
Who discovers that the "Beast" is only a dead airman? Why do you think this character can see the truth and the others can't? Simon realises that the "beast" is only a dead airman. Simon has more sense and knows that the "beast" is only themselves.
Describe how Jack uses everyone's fear of the "beast" to gain more power? He encourages the others to join his tribe to be protected from the "beast". He says that the "beast" can come in many forms and that it can never truely be killed. He keeps them feeling insecure and threatened, which increases his power.
Why do they initially elect Ralph to be their leader? They sense they can trust him, and he is the closest they have to an adult leader.
Give one way in which Ralph is a good leader and one way he should improve in. He uses his power to protect people. He doesn't think he is intelligent enough to be leader. He wishes he could think like Piggy.
How does Jack feel about democracy? Why do the boys follow him instead of Ralph? He rejects democracy and says "Bollocks to the rules". A lot of the boys enjoy Jack's exciting ideas. Roger calls him a "proper chief".
What does Jack's sharpened stick represent? His power maintained by fear and violence.
Describe a bit of the island that is peaceful and calm. The Lagoon where Simon goes is usually calm and unthreatening. It is a safe place as well because the sharks are on the other side of the reef.
Give two examples where the boys destroy the island. Ralph complains that the littluns "use everywhere" as a toilet. The Hunters use fire as a weapon at the end of the book, and set the whole island on fire.
What does Golding suggest will never be the same again? The island.
Give two examples of things the boys initially do to have fun. Ralph the others dive and swim in the sandy pool. They have fun deciding what the choir would be, as if they are giving a pretend role in a game.
Give an example of a minor act of violence the boys consider to be a game. Roger and Maurice kick the sand castles the littluns have made.
What does the Naval Officer think the boys are up to? He thinks they are having "fun and games" where actually they are trying to kill Ralph.
Name two of the most naturally evil characters in the book and three of the least. Jack and Roger are the most evil characters and Ralph, Simon and Piggy are three of the least evil characters.
What does Ralph do that makes him realise that he is capable of evil? This is the morning after they killed Simon.
Briefly explain the different meaning of the pig's head on a stick. To Jack, it represents an imaginary beast. It is repulsive . It shows us how far they have sunk into supersticion and savagery. The Pig's head is called "Lord of the Flies" which also means "The Devil".
