Ecosystem Services and Environmental Resources

SDGs Call for action by all countries to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.
Sustainable Development Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Biocapacity The capacity of a given biologically productive area to generate an ongoing supply of renewable resources and to absorb its spillover wastes.
Provisioning Services Services we take directly from earth (natural resources)
Regulating Services Benefits provided by ecosystem processes that moderate natural phenomena (climate regulation, erosion..)
Supporting Services Basic processes that allow the Earth to sustain basic lifeforms.
Cultural Services Non material benefits that contribute to the cultural development of the local, national and global communities
Renewable resources Can be regenerated in a short time ( less than a human lifetime)
Non-renewable resources Components that would take millions of years to be regenerated by nature.
Carbon Footprint Total amount of greenhouse gases that are generated by human actions.
Natural Emissions Emissions that contribute to the greenhouse effects
Anthropogenic Emissions Emissions that contribute to the greenhouse effect caused by human activities
Greenhouse Effect Maintains the warmth that sustains life on Earth.
Global Warming Happens when too much heat is trapped by greenhouse gases and cases a rise in global temperature, causing climate change.
Potential Energy Stored energy
Kinetic Energy Energy in motion
Primary Sources Energy that is captured, stored or found in nature
Secondary Sources Sources of energy obtained from a primary source
Electrochemistry Chemical processes that allow electrons to move from one element to another. ---> Redox Reactions
