| acidic | pH less than 7 |
| Arrhenius acid | substances that produce hydrogen ions when dissolved in water |
| Arrhenius base | substances that produce hydroxide ions when dissolved in water |
| basic (alkaline) | pH greater than 7 |
| Bronsted-Lowry acids | substances that are proton donors in any solution |
| Bronsted-Lowry bases | substances that are proton acceptors in any solution |
| hydronium ion | H3O+ (a protonated water molecule), present in all aqueous acids |
| hydroxide ion | OH- (what remains after water lost a hydrogen) |
| dissociation | the separation of an ionic substance into its positive and negative ions |
| neutralization reactions | an acid-base reaction that forms a salt and water |
| neutral | pH = 7 |
| salt | the metal-nonmetal product of an acid-base reaction |
| pH | a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration of any solution; it is equal to the -log[H+] |
