Myth Terms to Know

Mythology terms to know.

TermDefinition
Myth A traditional story, originally oral, with no identifiable author, especially ones concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.
Folktale A type of myth that features common people and/or fanciful animals.
Legend A type of myth that is about people, places or events that contain some amount of historical truth and often recount the adventures of some great hero.
Archetype A universally understood type of person or thing. For example, the damsel in distress, the hero, or the wise old woman.
Allegory A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or a political one.
Monomyth The hero’s journey. This is the pattern that a large number of stories take, in which a hero sets off on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed.
Pantheon A grouping of all the gods of a people or culture.
