Statistics Review

TermDefinition
random sample a sample that fairly represents a population because each member has an equal chance of being chosen
population inference to make a population inference (based on sample information given), write and solve a proportion
To find percent using a proportion Write and solve a proportion part/whole = %/100
Mean the arithmetic average of a distribution, obtained by adding the scores and then dividing by the number of scores
Median of a set of numbers the middle score in a distribution; half the scores are above it and half are below it If there are two numbers, add them and divide by two
Mode the most frequently occurring score(s) in a distribution
Range the difference between the highest and lowest scores in a distribution
Dot Plot a graphical device that summarizes data by the number of dots above each data value on the horizontal axis
Box Plot (Box and Whisker Plot) a graphical representation showing the five-number summary of data (minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, maximum)
Interquartile Range (IQR) the difference between the first and third quartiles
