| idiom | an expression that doesn't make sense literally |
| imagery | description that appeals to sense (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) |
| oxymoron | combines opposite contradictory terms in a brief phrase |
| paradox | a statement that has reasoning but leads to a senseless or illogical conclusion |
| parallelism | similar structure in a series of words, phrases, or clauses |
| parody | work that imitates the style/content of another for comedic effect |
| periodic sentence | sentence whose main clause is withheld until the end |
| quantitative evidence | includes things that can be measured, counted, or numbered |
| symbolism | where an object represents an idea |
| syllogism | deductive reasining: major premise, minor premise, conclusion |
| juxtaposition | side by side elements to present a comparison or contrast |
| anaphora | repetition of word/phrase at the beginning of successive clauses |
| rhetorical question | a question asked for rhetorical effect no answer |
| epistrophe | repetition of word at end of sentences |
| satire | use of humor, irony, exaggeration to criticize people's stupidity usually in politics |
| asyndeton | omission of conjunctions between phrases, clauses, or words |

| polysyndeton | deliberate use of many conjunctions |
| allegory | a literary work in which characters, objects or actions represent other ideas |
| steam of consciousness | a persons thoughts and conscious reactions to events, perceived as a continuous flow. |
