fuel

QuestionAnswer
What is a fuel? Substance that has chemical energy stored within them and provide us with energy.
Define a non-renewable resource Those which are used faster than they can be replaced.
Define sustainability. Meeting long term ongoing needs of society while still meeting the immediate and short term needs. Taking care of the environment as well the economic and social well being of future generations.
summarise how fossil fuels are formed. Ancient plants, animals and microorganisms buried under tons of mud sand and rock and under pressure and temperature conditions changes over millions of years.
Write an equation for burning coal. C + O2 → CO2
Since coal is not pure carbon, what else can be made during this reaction? Ash is formed, as well as water vapour and sulfur dioxide
Briefly describe how the fractional distillation column works. The column has areas of different temperatures. There are horizontal trays with bubble caps. As vapour rises it forces the caps up. Substances that have boiling points almost equal to the temperature of the liquid in the trays condense and is collected.
Explain using IMF’s why these fractions have different boiling points. Larger and longer fractions will exert more dispersion forces between molecules meaning they will have high boiling points and will condense further down the column.
What is LPG liqud petroleum gas. Propane and butane which become liquids under pressure
fracking. Summarise Drill a well into the deposit . The well is encased to prevent leakage into local water supplies. Fracking fluid is then pumped down the well at high pressure. This fractures the rock or coal creating fissures through which gas can flow
Why is there debate around the use and extraction of CSG? The chemicals previously used as fracking fluids were highly carcinogenic and could escape and contaminate groundwater
What is a renewable resource? Can be obtained from natural resources that can be constantly replenished
Why are biofuel described as carbon neutral? Since they are derived from plant material they removed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis when the plants are growing. Therefore once burned they are replacing the carbon dioxide they already removed. net zero
Write an equation for the production of bioethanol C6H12O6 → 2CH3CH2OH + 2CO2
What is biogas? Released during the breakdown of organic waste
