Neuron Vocabulary Review
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| dendrites | : any of the usually branching extensions of a neuron over which impulses travel toward the cell body, the receiving part of the neuron |
| soma | : the cell body is the core section of the neuron, the cell body contains genetic information, maintains the neuron's structure, and provides energy to drive activities |
| Node of Ranvier | : a small gap in the myelin sheath. it allows the generation of a fast electrical impulse along the axon |
| axon | :may represent over 95% of the total volume of the neuron. it carries electrical impulses and projects to synapses with dendrites or cell bodies of other neurons |
| Myelin Sheath | :an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord; It is made up of protein and fatty substances; allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells |
| synapse | :the places where neurons connect and communicate with each other |
| axon terminal | :function is to release neurotransmitter when stimulated by an electrical signal carried by the axon |
| nucleus of a neuron | :responsible for cell function and regulation, contains the DNA of the cell and produces ribosomes for production of protein |
