Neuron Vocabulary Review

TermDefinition
dendrites : any of the usually branching extensions of a neuron over which impulses travel toward the cell body, the receiving part of the neuron
soma : the cell body is the core section of the neuron, the cell body contains genetic information, maintains the neuron's structure, and provides energy to drive activities
Node of Ranvier : a small gap in the myelin sheath. it allows the generation of a fast electrical impulse along the axon
axon :may represent over 95% of the total volume of the neuron. it carries electrical impulses and projects to synapses with dendrites or cell bodies of other neurons
Myelin Sheath :an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord; It is made up of protein and fatty substances; allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
synapse :the places where neurons connect and communicate with each other
