falter to lose strength or purpose and stop, or almost stop
hobble to walk in an awkward way, usually because the feet or legs are injured
stricken suffering severely from the effects of something unpleasant
brusque quick and rude in manner or speech
tantalize to make someone feel excited or attracted by an offer or a suggestion of something that is, in fact, unlikely to happen
taut tight or completely stretched
insolently in a rude way that does not show respect
implore to ask someone to do or not do something in a very sincere, emotional, and determined way
caustic strongly critical ; A caustic chemical burns or destroys things, especially anything made of living cells
subside If a condition subsides, it becomes less strong or extreme
quaver (of a person’s voice) to sound nervous, esp. because of emotion
warily in a way that is wary (= not completely trusting or certain)
chatterbox a person, especially a child, who talks a lot:
devastating causing a lot of damage or destruction
deprivation a situation in which you do not have things or conditions that are usually considered necessary for a pleasant life
sacrifice the act of giving up something that is valuable to you in order to help someone else
integrity the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles
