Unit 2F
Electron Configuration
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ground State | electrons are in the lowest possible energy level |
| Excited State | one or more electrons occupy higher energy level |
| Rule 1 | Orbitals fill in the order of increasing energy levels from lowest to highest |
| Rule 2 | Each orbital can hold 2 electrons with opposite spin |
| Rule 3 | When there is a subshell of equal energy, each orbital becomes half-filled before any of them becomes completely filled. |
| 1 box | 1 orbital |
| Group of boxes | 1 subshell |
| Number | energy level |
| Letter | orbital shape |
| s | 1 box |
| p | 3 boxes |
| d | 5 boxes |
