Liberty Party (1840-1848) Grew out of the split in the abolitionist movement in the late 1830s and merged into the Free Soil party in 1848.
Free Soil Party (1848-1852) Opposed the spread of slavery into territories and repeal of the Fugitive Slave Law; forerunners of the Republican Party of 1850s; "Free soil, free speech, free labor, and free men" was this party's motto.
American Party (Know-Nothings) (1849-1856) Grew out of nativist sentiment of the 1830s and 1840s; anti-Catholic and pro-immigration restrictions.
People's Party (Populist) (1892-1908) Formed in response to farmer grievances against railroads and banks following the Civil War. Platform (Omaha) included free coinage of silver, progressive income tax, eight-hour work day, and the direct election of U.S. senators
Progressive Party (Bull Moose, 1912) (1912-1924) Grew from split between William Taft and Theodore Roosevelt in 1912: Anti-trust laws, regulation of business, women's suffrage, lower tariffs, + direct democracy (recall, referendum, and initiative).
States' Rights Party (Dixiecrats) (1948) Formed in response to Truman's endorsement of modest civil rights proposals; focus was to retain segregation of the races (Jim Crow laws). Truman surprisingly defeated Strom Thurmond in the 1948 election despite some opposition in the South.
American Independent Party (1968-1972) Grew out of the civil rights revolution in the 1960s and led by George Wallace; primary focus was maintaining racial segregation.
Federalist Party (1790-1810) Early political party that believed in a strong central government, reduced states' rights, loose interpretation of the Constitution, and a National Bank; pro-British.
Democratic Republicans (1790-1810) Party led by Jefferson that opposed the Federalists and favored a weak central government, protecting states' rights, low taxes, and a strict view of the Constitution. Pro-farmer and pro-France.
Jacksonian Democrats (1828-1848) Anti-National Bank, pro-slavery, pro-Mexican War, Jeffersonian traditions/ideas, and believed in a strong executive.
Whigs (1832-1852) Created by HENRY CLAY (and supporting "BIT"). Favored business interests, Hamiltonian traditions/ideas, Pro-National Bank, supported the National government controlling/building of roads and canals (American System), anti-Mexican War.
Democratic Party (1850-1900) Proslavery, favored secession from Union, States' rights, agrarian-oriented, opposed gold standard, supported lowering tariff, and opposed imperialism in 1890s.
Republican Party (1854-1900) Opposed the spread of slavery and secession, Whig influence/pro-business, supported gold standard, supported high tariffs, and favored imperialism in 1890s.
