Physics - Forces

QuestionAnswer
What are the 2 categories of 'quantity'? vector & scalar
What is 'scalar' quantity? measured by magnitude (size) only
What is 'vector' quantity? measured by magnitude & direction
What is a 'non-contact' force? a force which acts on an object without being in contact with it e.g. gravity
What is a 'contact' force? A force which acts between objects that are physically touching e.g. friction
What is a 'resultant' force? When two or more forces act on an object, the resultant force can be found by adding up the individual forces
What is 'distance'? how much ground an object has covered (scalar quantity)
What is 'displacement'? how far out of place an object is (vector quantity)
In a distance-time graph, what does the greater the gradient (steeper the line) mean? the faster the object is moving
What is Newton's 1st Law?
What is a 'force'? A push or a pull that acts on an object due to the interaction with another object
Name 3 things that forces can change? speed, direction & shape
What is 'weight'? the force of gravity on a mass
What is 'electrostatic' force? the force between two charged objects (attractive or repulsive)
What is 'thrust'? the force causing an object to move
What is 'air resistance'? the friction of the air on a moving object
What is 'upthrust'? the force of a fluid (such as water) pushing an object upwards (making it float)
What is 'compression'? forces that act inward on an object, squeezing it
What is 'tension'? a force that pulls two objects connected by a length, such as a string or rope
What is 'reaction' force? a force that pushes touching objects apart
What is 'friction'? a force that opposes motion, caused by objects rubbing against each other

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
