Paleography Terms

Random paper and pen terms

Calligraphy Handwritten lettering or decorative handwriting
Codex A group of manuscripts bound together in one volume
Hand The distinctive features of an individual's handwriting
Manuscript A book or document written by hand
Medium Any type of writing surface, such as papyrus, paper, or vellum
Paleography The study of early handwriting
Paper Material made from plant fibers and prepared into thin sheets
Papyrus A writing surface made from reeds
Parchment or vellum Prepare animal skin
Preservation The act of preserving something
Quill A writing instrument made from a bird feather
Scribe A person who records or transcribes documents
Script Handwriting with connected letters, such as cursive
Single Sheet One sheet of parchment used to record legal documents
