Ecology - Levels

Levels of the Environment

Ecology The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment
Biotic All of the organisms that live together and interact with one another
Abiotic All of the physical factors - such as water, soil, light, and temperature
Organism Anything that can independently carry out life processes
Individual a single organism
Population A group of individuals of the same species that live together in the same area at the same time
Community All of the populations of different species that live and interact in an area
Ecosystem A community of organisms and their nonliving (abiotic) environment.
Biome A group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms
Biosphere The part of Earth where life exists
Water, Light, Temperature and Wind Examples of Abiotic factors
Grass, Deer, Insects and Reptiles Examples of Biotic factors
Tundra, Ocean, Rainforest, Desert, Deciduous Forest, Grasslands Examples of Biomes
Clean drinking water, oxygen from plants, fertile soil, cycling of nutrients, recreation Ecosystem services examples
