| System of Alliances | The strategy of using allies to defeat the opposing side in battle. The Triple Alliance was an alliance between Italy, and Austria-Hungary in 1914. The result is a stronger force. |
| Triple Alliance | A partnership between Italy and Austria-Hungary in 1914. The result is a stronger force. |
| Triple Entente | A rival block in 1893 and France and Russia allied. It was a contract (non-binding) between France, Russia, and Britain/ The ending was they formed a ‘team’ named the Allies. |
| Nationalism | Countries thought they were superior and each country tried to one-up each other. In 1905 there was a lot of competition which brought France and Germany back. |
| Militarism | Glorified the military and painted was as ‘good’. Militarism was one of the factors contributing to WWI. |
| Archduke Franz Ferdinand | Killed along with his wife Sophie was the spark that started World War I on June 28, 1914. |
| Gavrilo Princip | Killer of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed along with his wife Sophie on June 28, 1914. |
| Kaiser Wilhelm II (William) | Wrote letter to Francis Joseph suggesting that he stand against Serbia. this was sometime near after Archduke Franz Ferdinad and Sophie’s death on June 28, 1914. |
| “Blank check” | Promise of unconditional support “no matter what the cost”. Germany gave one to Austria in 1914. |
| Schlieffen Plan | Designed to avoid a two-front war.Germany's plan to attack France first then defeat Russia. |
| Trench Warfare | War in the trenches with hand to hand combat. Trench warfare began in 1914/15 and the outcome of trench warfare was/were casualties. |
| T.E. Lawrence | Led guerrilla raids against the Turks in 1916. In the process they blew up bridges and supply trains. |
| Poison Gas | First developed and used in 1915 first by Germany, then later on the British and the French started using such weapons. The outcome was to use it in battle. |
| Lusitania | In May 1915 Lusitania was a ship that was supposedly carrying weapons and therefore was torpedoed. |
| The US joins the war. | joins the war in 1918 because of the sinking of Lusitania and the Zimmermann telegram. The outcome was 2 mil American soldiers joined the Allied forces. |
| Fourteen Points | Speech given by Wilson. The speech was given in 1918 and the outcome was to hopefully prevent future wars. |
| Self-determination | ‘Strategy’ Wilson admired. It was the right for people to choose their own form of government. This was sometime in 1918. |
| Armistice | An agreement to end fighting with the allies. The outcome was on 11 A.M. on November 11, 1918, the last war known as the Great War ended. |
| Treaty of Versailles | Germany would take the guilt of causing the war. This was during June of 191. |
| Collective security | A strategy where a group of nations would combine and work to preserve peace (of all) in 1919. |
| War guilt clause | Forced Germany and others who were part of the Central powers to take the guilt/blame for the war in 1919. |
| German reparations | Payment Germany had to pay, which was a total of 30 billion (2.7 trillion today). This was also 1919 sometime in June. |
| Woodrow Wilson | 28 U.S. President. In 1915 he threatened to cancel diplomatic relations with Germany, so Germany agreed to cut back on its submarine campaign. |
| Mandate System | Compromise between European colonies in Africa, Asia, and the the Pacific. They all hoped to make peace and end the imperial rule. |
| League of Nations | Group of over 40 nations. They agreed to negotiate disagreements rather than go to war. |
