Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Absorption | The transfer of energy into a medium |
| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food |
| Carbon Cycle | The continuous movement of carbon in and between the abiotic and biotic environments |
| Carbon Dioxide | A gas that is a natural component of the atmosphere; produced by cells during cellular respiration and used by plants and other organisms for photosynthesis |
| Carbon Dioxide–Oxygen Cycle | The movement of carbon dioxide and oxygen on Earth by the processes of respiration and photosynthesis |
| Cellular Respiration | The process of obtaining energy from the breaking of chemical bonds in nutrients |
| Chemical Energy | Energy stored in chemical bonds and released through chemical reactions |
| Chemical Equation | Chemical formulas and symbols written to represent a reaction |
| Chemical Process | Method or means of changing one or more chemicals or chemical compounds |
| Chloroplast | A membrane-bound organelle in plants that is the site of photosynthesis |
| Consumer | An organism that must consume other organisms for nutrients |
| Heterotroph | An organism that must consume other organisms for energy |
| Mitochondrion | The organelle that functions in energy production; the power factory of the cell. Site of cellular respiration. |
| Organelle | A structure inside a cell that performs a specialized function |
| Oxygen | A gas produced by plants during photosynthesis that animals use for respiration |
| Photosynthesis | A chemical reaction during which plants convert radiant energy from the Sun to chemical energy; the reaction converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar (glucose) and oxygen |
| Primary Consumer | An organism that gets its energy by feeding on producers in the food chain |
| Producer | An organism that transforms energy from the Sun and uses carbon dioxide and water to make food |
| Product | A substance produced during a chemical reaction |
| Radiant Energy | Energy from the Sun that reaches Earth as visible light, ultraviolet radiation, and infrared (heat) radiation |
| Reactant | A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a chemical reaction |
| Reaction | Resistance or force of equal magnitude acting in the opposite direction to an action force |
