Solutions Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solution | Homogeneous mixture at the molecular level; very small particles |
| Soluble | capable of being dissolved in a given solvent |
| Saturated | Solution that cannot dissolve more solute |
| Solute | the substance that is dissolved |
| Insoluble | Describes a substance that cannot be dissolved in a given solvent |
| Supersaturated | Solution that has more solute then it can hold; this solution must be heated to add more solute than it should be able to |
| Solvent | Substance that does the dissolving |
| Unsaturated | a solution that can hold more solute |
| Colloid | a mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size; shows the tyndall effect but cannot be filtered |
| Suspension | A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration; has very large particles |
| Tyndall effect | Scattering of a light beam as it passes through a colloid |
| Factors that affect solubility | temperature and pressure |
| Factors that affect the rate of dissolving | agitation, temperature, particle size |
| Miscible | Describes two liquids that are soluble in each other |
| Immiscible | liquids that are not soluble in each other |
