Suddam Hussein The dictator of Iran who is elected in 1979. He sent his army to invade Kuwait in 1990
Cuba Country dependent on U.S. imports and buying sugar.
The East Bloc This was the group of communist states of Central and Eastern Europe. The Council for mutual economic assistance intended to rebuild this independently of the West. Marshall Plan was limited to countries in western bloc, increasing Cold War tensions.
Warsaw Pact An alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations. This was in response to the NATO
European Economic Community An international organization of European countries formed after World War II to reduce trade barriers and increase cooperation among its members.
Brezhnev Doctrine Soviet Union and its allies had the right to intervene in any socialist country whenever they saw the need.
Korean War The conflict between Communist North Korea and Non-Communist South Korea. The United Nations (led by the United States) helped South Korea.
U.S. Liberalism -more government -more welfare/social safety-net -less military spending -more regulation of business -tends to be secular, but there is a "religious left" -allegedly believes in a less strict construction/interpretation of the Constitution
Khrushchev Soviet leader, publicly denounced Stalin, free many political prisoners eased censorship
Cuban Missile Crisis The 1962 confrontation bewteen US and the Soviet Union over Soviet missiles in Cuba. JFK vs. Khruschev.
Non-Aligned Nations Developing countries that announced their neutrality in the Cold War.
Aytollah Ruhollah Khomeini Shi"ite philosopher and cleric who overthrew the Shah of Iran in 1979 and created an Islamic Republic
Mahatma Gandi Fought for independence from Great Britian through "non-violence", wanted a return to village life
Nelson Mandela First black president of South Africa; ended Apartheid.
Francisco "Pancho" Villa A popular leader during the Mexican Revolution. An outlaw in his youth, when the revolution started, he formed a cavalry army in the north of Mexico and fought for the rights of the landless in collaboration with Emiliano Zapata. (819)
Getulio Vargas Dictator of Brazil from 1930 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1954. Defeated in the presidential election of 1930, he overthrew the government and created Estado Novo ('New State'), a dictatorship that emphasized industrialization.
Fulgencio Batista Authoritarian ruler of Cuba until overthrown by Castro.
Fidel Castro Cuban socialist leader who overthrew a dictator in 1959 and established a Marxist socialist state in Cuba (born in 1927)
Ronald Reagan President (1981-1989) who raised military funding so much the USSR almost collapsed keeping up. Increased conservative ideas around the world.
Glasnost a policy of the Soviet government allowing freer discussion of social problems
Perestroika A policy initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev that involved restructuring of the social and economic status quo in communist Russia towards a market based economy and society
The Marshall Plan A United States program of economic aid for the reconstruction of Europe (1948-1952)
Great Leap Forward Started by Mao Zedong, combined collective farms into People's Communes, failed because there was no incentive to work harder, ended after 2 years.
Cultural Revolution Campaign in China ordered by Mao Zedong to purge the Communist Party of his opponents and instill revolutionary values in the younger generation.
Palestine Liberation Organization a group formed in the 1960s to regain the Arab land in Israel for Palestinian Arabs
Afganistan USA pays, equips, and trains Afgan rebels (TALIBAN). Rebels take power.
Asian Tigers Collective name for South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore-nations that became economic powers in the 1970s and 1980s.
Tiananmen Square Site in Beijing where Chinese students and workers gathered to demand greater political openness in 1989. The demonstration was crushed by Chinese military with great loss of life.
All Muslim League political organization that established the nation of Pakistan
Quit India Movement Mass civil disobedience campaign that began in the summer of 1942 to end British control of India
Jawahrlal Nehru Gandhi's successor in the INC; will promote an industrialization movement in India
Muhammad Ali Hinnah Founded the state of Pakistan; leads All Muslim League
Kwame Nkrumah Led the decolonization process to establish Ghana. Made Convention Peoples' Party.
Apartheid Laws (no longer in effect) in South Africa that physically separated different races into different geographic areas.
Mexico Country where the poor stay poor and the rich stayed rich. Unfair distribution of wealth.
Francisco Madero Early leader in the Mexican Revolution; in 1911 became president of Mexico; wanted land ownership and free, honest elections, two years later he was murdered, led to power struggles, peasants hated him and he was assasinated.
Emiliano Zapata Indian revolutionary leader in south-central Mexico who tried to take over land from wealthy landowners to distribute it.
Mexican Constitution of 1917 Promised land reform, limited foreign ownership of key resources, guaranteed the rights of workers, and placed restrictions on clerical education; marked formal end of Mexican Revolution.
Alvaro Obregon Emerged as leader of the Mexican government in 1915; elected president in 1920. Civil wars end.
Party of Institutionalized Revolution (PRI) inclusive Mexican political party developing from the 1920s; ruled for the rest of the 20th century.
Pampas Fertile land in Argentina dominated by wealthy landowners and dependent on imports
Estado Novo "New State"
Juan Peron President of Argentina (1946-1955, 1973-1974). As a military officer, he championed the rights of labor. Aided by his wife Eva Duarte Peron, he was elected president in 1946. He built up Argentinean industry, became very popular among the urban poor.
Jacobo Arbenz Communist leader in Guatemala who was overthrown in 1954 by the CIA.
Banana Republic Term used to describe a Central American nation dominated by United States business interests
Mikhail Gorbachev Head of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991. His liberalization effort improved relations with the West, but he lost power after his reforms led to the collapse of Communist governments in eastern Europe.
Boris Yeltsin President of the Russian Republic in 1991. Helped end the USSR and force Gorbachev to resign.
