DefinitionTerm
data that fall into categories (word responses rather than number responses) categorical data
a statistical graph that shows the distribution of a data set using a five-number summary along a number line box-and-whisker plot (box plot)
describes how the data values are arranged • measures of center • measures of variability • shape • spread data distribution
shows the number of times a data value or values occur in the data set frequency table
a statistical graph showing the shape of the data using bars above intervals of values histogram
the distance between the first and third quartiles of the data set; shows the spread of the middle 50% of the data values (a measure of variability) interquartile range (IQR)
find the sum (+) of the data values and then divide (÷) by the number of values in the data set (a measure of center) mean
the average distance that the data values are spread around the mean. (a measure of variability) mean absolute deviation (MAD)
the middle number in an ordered data set (if two numbers are in the middle find the mean of those two numbers) (a measure of center) median
the item(s) in a data set that occurs most frequently; there can be one, more than one, or none (a measure of center) mode

four parts of a data set with the same number of data values in each part quartiles
the difference (-) between the greatest and least values in a data set (a measure of variability) range
a question that investigates an aspect of the real world and can have variety in responses (either numerical or categorical) statistical question
