TECHNIQUES OF PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE
| Term | Definition |

| Adjectives | descriptive words used to add emphasis and to create an emotional response |
| Alliteration | repetition of initial consonant sounds in order to emphasize certain words and make them more memorable |
| Anecdotes | short personal stores used to connect with the audience and add evidence or credibility to an arguement |
| Asyndeton | figure of speech in which coordinating conjunctions join words or clauses in a sentence into relationships of equal importance |
| Assertion | when an idea is presented as fact without full information or evidence |
| Attacks | when a speaker/writer addresses an opposing viewpoint and attacks their argument or character |
| Bias | the presentation of only one side of an issue or viewpoint and is used to subjectively influence and audience |
| Connotation | the ideas or feelings that a certain word invokes and is used to create certain emotional responses, the implied meaning of a word |
| Ethos (credibility) | establishment of authority and reliability, used to gain trust of an audience |
| Pathos (emotion or pity) | an appeal to emotion |
| Exaggeration | representation of something as greater than it actually is to grab the audiences' attention |
| Evidence | facts that indicated whether a view is true or valid |
| Denotation | the literal, dictionary meaning of a word |
| Diction | an author or poet's word choice |
| Figurative Language | creates imagery and expresses things non-literally; it helps make an idea more emotive, vivid, and convincing |
| Generalization | the inference that a claim is true for most people or a majority and is used to enforce prejudices of an audience |
| Rule of 3 | when 3 adjectives or phrases are used to make an idea more memorable |
| Jargon | special words or expressions used by s profession or certain group to establish credibility |
| Loaded Words | words used to produce emotion in an audience |
| Pronouns | words that take the place of nouns and are used to create a sense of unity with an audience or distance from a common enemy |
| Logos (Reasons or Facts and Statistics) | power of the mind to think and form judgments logically; appeals to the rationality of an audience |
| Repetition | the reoccurrence of certain words or phrases and is used to emphasize certain ideas and make them more memorable |
