AP Physics Unit 7
Rotational Dynamics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Torque | Units: Newton-meters (Nm) -is similar to force, but for rotating objects -balanced means constant angular velocity -unbalanced means angular acceleration -direction can be cw or ccw τ=rFsinθ θ = angle between r and F r = level arm length (cm) |
| Center of Gravity or Center of Mass | -the average location of all the masses of an object or system of objects -the "balance point of an OOSOO -the torque due to the weight of an OOSOO acts at the CoM *if you throw something it would bounce about its center of mass |
| Static Equilibrium | ∑F= 0 in all directions ∑T= 0 for all rotation axes |
| How to do Equilibrium Problems | 1. Extended Object FBD 2. coordinate system 3. choose a rotation axis 4. write equations of equilibrium: ∑Fx=0, ∑Fy=0, ∑T=0 |
| Moment of Inertia | A quantity that described hwo difficult it is to change the angular velocity of an object *more mass away from rotation axis -> larger rotational inertia* I= ∑mr^2 |
| Rotational Kinetic Energy | -The KE of a rotation gobject due to its angular veloctiy KErot=1/2I ω^2 -this is a type of Mechanical energy MEi=MEf for a closed system |
| Rolling Motion | -Objects roll due to static friction between the object and the ground |
